Thai Beverage Can Ltd. (TBC), in collaboration with Thai Beverage Recycle Co., Ltd. (TBR), Anglo Asia Group (Thailand) Co., Ltd., UACJ (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the Sustainable Resources Management Foundation (3R), the Thailand Institute of Packaging and Recycling Management for Sustainable Environment (TIPMSE), and the Thailand Supply Chain Network (TSCN), organized the “Can to Can Journey” event on 4 – 5 July 2024. This event followed the journey of aluminium cans after consumption, with 104 participants from 42 organizations.
The “Can to Can Journey” event was designed to support the strategy of driving holistic economic development under the concept of the BCG Model: Bio Economy, Circular Economy, Green Economy—an economic model aimed at sustainable development. The event also aimed to develop and drive the recycling system for aluminium packaging based on the Circular Economy concept, enabling a fully closed-loop process within Thailand. It provided participants with a first hand experience of the aluminium can life cycle, from production and collection after use to recycling it into high-quality raw materials, allowing the cans to be recycled endlessly. Companies like Thai Beverage Can Ltd., Thai Beverage Recycle Co., Ltd., Anglo Asia Group Co., Ltd., and UACJ (Thailand) Co., Ltd. shared their insights into the complete aluminium can lifecycle, from production to recycling, giving participants a deep understanding of the process.
The aluminium packaging industry in Thailand and the ASEAN region is fully committed to implementing a Circular Economy. This effort is a collaboration between the government, beverage producers, packaging manufacturers, universities, research institutes, TIPMSE, the Federation of Thai Industries, and the 3R Foundation. Together, they are developing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principle in Thailand, ensuring it suits all sectors. This initiative particularly emphasizes the importance of businesses taking responsibility for the environment. The goal is to manage aluminium packaging waste more efficiently, minimizing environmental impact. The aluminium industry is also focused on decarbonization, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as much as possible, eventually reaching net-zero. Using recycled aluminium in can production cuts energy consumption by 95%, reducing the carbon footprint by 30 times compared to using new raw materials, which aligns with customer strategies to lower product carbon footprints.
The “Can to Can Journey” event brought together participants from various sectors, including executives and partners from beverage companies, members of the Thailand Supply Chain Network (TSCN), university faculty, and NGOs like WWF and GIZ (the German Corporation for International Cooperation, focused on sustainable development). Throughout the event, the participants followed the journey of aluminium cans, witnessing the development of a 100% Closed Loop Recycling system. This system, successfully implemented by TBC, TBR, Anglo Asia, and UACJ Thailand, ensures complete and continuous recycling within Thailand. This makes Thailand one of only 4 countries in Asia with a fully domestic supply chain for aluminium can recycling, from sorting, paint removing, melting, and forming new cans.
Thank all the participants and organizers of the “Can to Can Journey” event. Your contributions have played a key role in driving the efficient recycling of environmentally friendly aluminium cans in Thailand.
