Solar Rooftop Phase 3 at TBC 2

On 30 July 2024, the executive team, led by Mr. Saroj Chayavivatkul, President of Thai Beverage Can Ltd. (TBC), and Mr. Vichien Rungwattanakit, Senior Executive Vice President of Packaging and Engineering Business at Berli Jucker Public Co., Ltd., along with TBC employees, participated in the opening ceremony of the Phase 3 solar power generation system at Thai Beverage Can 2.

The installation of this Solar Rooftop has a power generation capacity of 999 kWh, which is equivalent to approximately 1,258,117 kWh per year. It will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 670 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. With all 3 phases combined, TBC’s total power generation capacity will reach 5 MWh.

This aligns with TBC’s Sustainability Goals 2030 (TBC SG 2030), specifically under the Product Stewardship strategy: Climate Leader. The company aims to promote the use of renewable energy in its production processes, targeting 20% by 2030. This shift involves reducing the use of polluting fossil fuels in favor of clean solar energy.

TBC commits to driving the use of clean energy for a sustainable business, society, and environment.

TBC, in Collaboration with Partners from the Aluminium Business Group, Organizes the 5th ‘Can to Can Journey’ Event

Thai Beverage Can Ltd. (TBC), in collaboration with Thai Beverage Recycle Co., Ltd. (TBR), Anglo Asia Group (Thailand) Co., Ltd., UACJ (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the Sustainable Resources Management Foundation (3R), the Thailand Institute of Packaging and Recycling Management for Sustainable Environment (TIPMSE), and the Thailand Supply Chain Network (TSCN), organized the “Can to Can Journey” event on 4 – 5 July 2024. This event followed the journey of aluminium cans after consumption, with 104 participants from 42 organizations.

The “Can to Can Journey” event was designed to support the strategy of driving holistic economic development under the concept of the BCG Model: Bio Economy, Circular Economy, Green Economy—an economic model aimed at sustainable development. The event also aimed to develop and drive the recycling system for aluminium packaging based on the Circular Economy concept, enabling a fully closed-loop process within Thailand. It provided participants with a first hand experience of the aluminium can life cycle, from production and collection after use to recycling it into high-quality raw materials, allowing the cans to be recycled endlessly. Companies like Thai Beverage Can Ltd., Thai Beverage Recycle Co., Ltd., Anglo Asia Group Co., Ltd., and UACJ (Thailand) Co., Ltd. shared their insights into the complete aluminium can lifecycle, from production to recycling, giving participants a deep understanding of the process.

The aluminium packaging industry in Thailand and the ASEAN region is fully committed to implementing a Circular Economy. This effort is a collaboration between the government, beverage producers, packaging manufacturers, universities, research institutes, TIPMSE, the Federation of Thai Industries, and the 3R Foundation. Together, they are developing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principle in Thailand, ensuring it suits all sectors. This initiative particularly emphasizes the importance of businesses taking responsibility for the environment. The goal is to manage aluminium packaging waste more efficiently, minimizing environmental impact. The aluminium industry is also focused on decarbonization, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as much as possible, eventually reaching net-zero. Using recycled aluminium in can production cuts energy consumption by 95%, reducing the carbon footprint by 30 times compared to using new raw materials, which aligns with customer strategies to lower product carbon footprints.

The “Can to Can Journey” event brought together participants from various sectors, including executives and partners from beverage companies, members of the Thailand Supply Chain Network (TSCN), university faculty, and NGOs like WWF and GIZ (the German Corporation for International Cooperation, focused on sustainable development). Throughout the event, the participants followed the journey of aluminium cans, witnessing the development of a 100% Closed Loop Recycling system. This system, successfully implemented by TBC, TBR, Anglo Asia, and UACJ Thailand, ensures complete and continuous recycling within Thailand. This makes Thailand one of only 4 countries in Asia with a fully domestic supply chain for aluminium can recycling, from sorting, paint removing, melting, and forming new cans.

Thank all the participants and organizers of the “Can to Can Journey” event. Your contributions have played a key role in driving the efficient recycling of environmentally friendly aluminium cans in Thailand.

TBC Joins the Launch Campaign for Coca-Cola x Trash Lucky The Recycle Me 2024

TBC joined as a partner for the 2nd time in Coca-Cola’s packaging return activity with Trash Lucky. The event was held on 26 June 2024, at Q Stadium, M Floor, EmQuartier.

The Coca-Cola x Trash Lucky The Recycle Me 2024 campaign has been organized by the Coca-Cola business group in Thailand for the 4th consecutive year, in collaboration with Trash Lucky, a provider of recycling drop-off points. The campaign has expanded its partnerships to include 13 organizations from retail, recycling, and prize sponsors, with total prize value exceeding 2 million baht. The campaign has also expanded its recycling drop-off points to over 80 locations, covering Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Phuket, and Songkhla. This year, the campaign is focusing more on targeting Gen Z, a group particularly interested in recycling. To encourage recycling behavior in a fun way, the campaign has partnered with various leading universities in Thailand.

As a leading beverage can producer in Thailand, TBC supports and promotes the recycling of aluminium cans to enable a Closed Loop Recycling system. This process allows used cans to be fully recycled without disassembly with world-class technology in Thailand’s aluminium can industry. Thailand is one of only four countries in Asia with a comprehensive aluminium can recycling process within the country. Currently, 88% of used aluminium cans are collected for recycling, and using recycled materials reduces the carbon footprint by 30 times compared to new materials.

This collaboration also supports Coca-Cola’s environmental and social responsibilities by delivering value through the collection of aluminium cans from the campaign, which are then recycled to produce new cans. Additionally, funds are donated to the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. the Princess Mother through the Recycle for Life project for individuals with limb disabilities. Last year, over 868 kilograms of aluminium materials were collected for the campaign.

The campaign runs for 6 months, from 1 July to 31 December 2024. For more information about the campaign and how to exchange points for rewards, visit https://trashlucky.com/recycleme/

TBC at WE CAN RUN | FUND FOR LEGS Charity Walk-Run Event

TBC set up a booth at the WE CAN RUN | FUND FOR LEGS charity walk-run event as a major sponsor. The event aimed to raise funds for the Recycle for Life project benefiting the Prostheses Foundation. It took place on 30 March 2024 (Expo Day) and 31 March 2024 (Race Day) at Sanam Luang, Bangkok.

At the booth, visitors could participate in a quiz about aluminium cans and receive canned water when collecting their shirts and BIBs on Expo Day and for runners on Race Day. Additionally, there was a can crusher available for participants to crush their used beverage cans before they were sent for recycling to be made into new cans.

The goal of this event was to support the production of 100 prosthetic legs, valued at over 2,500,000 THB, for disadvantaged individuals, and to recycle 4,800,000 used aluminium cans. Runners could exchange 5 used aluminium cans for a shirt and BIB, which helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 570 tons of CO2 equivalent (from recycling cans instead of mining new materials). This initiative promoted exercise for health, encouraged donations to the Prostheses Foundation, fosters a recycling culture, and helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions towards Thailand’s net- zero target.

This event was made possible through the strong collaboration of network partners, including the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. the Princess Mother, the Pollution Control Department, the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), Thai Beverage Public Co., Ltd., the TCP Group, ThaiNamthip Corporation Ltd., Haad Thip Public Co., Ltd., Thai Beverage Can Ltd., Thai Beverage Recycle Co., Ltd., and other partners like the 3R Foundation, Warrix Sport Public Co., Ltd., and Chabaa Bangkok Co., Ltd. This initiative exemplified producers’s responsibility to raise public awareness about post-consumer waste management.

Furthermore, this event was organized as a carbon-neutral event. Data on electricity use, food and drinks, transportation, signage, consumables, and waste were collected and assessed for greenhouse gas emissions, which total 47 tons of CO2 equivalent. The emissions were offset through voluntary carbon reduction projects according to Thailand’s standards, making this event carbon-neutral.
