On 4 September 2024, the Department of Climate Change and Environment, in collaboration with The Mall Group Co., Ltd., launched a campaign to promote the reduction of single-use plastics in shopping malls and department stores. The initiative aims to drive progress toward Thailand’s Net Zero 2065 goal, as part of the first roadshow event. The event, chaired by Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, took place at The Mall Lifestore Ngamwongwan in Nonthaburi Province, fostering collaboration among private sector networks to accelerate efforts toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
“To achieve Thailand’s designated goals, collaboration among the public sector, private sector, and citizens—known as the 4P partnership (Public-Private-People Partnership)—is essential for addressing environmental issues. Today marks a significant milestone for us to collectively raise awareness about plastic waste. I encourage everyone to reduce, abstain from, and eliminate the use of single-use plastics and to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives. Let us also ensure that 100% of plastic waste is reused or recycled and incorporate environmentally conscious habits into our daily lives to minimize activities that generate greenhouse gas emissions. By doing this, we can contribute to protecting and preserving the environment for ourselves and future generations,” said Dr. Phirun.
In support of this initiative, Thai Beverage Can Ltd. collaborated with the Department of Climate Change and Environment to deliver a can crusher to The Mall Lifestore Ngamwongwan. The machine will be used to collect used aluminium cans from the public, which will then be sold for recycling. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to support the operations of the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. The Princess Mother.
